Janet Tymmons

Welcome to my online gallery.

I'm a Sydney based artist. From my studio I execute my semi-abstract expressionistic paintings with a combination of acrylic paint, wax crayon and impasto gel. I'm a very tactile artist in my practice - when drawing I have to feel the direction of the line and when painting 'the line' guides the propensity of my colour.

As an Arts graduate from the National Art School in East Sydney, I majored in painting, studying under leading artists including John Coburn, Sid Ball and David Voight. Having taught Art in Sydney High School for many years, I went on to teaching Drawing at Paddington Art School. In 1989 I did a study tour in Egypt with the University of Sydney and in 1992 Art of the Renaissance Tour in Italy. In 2001 I graduated with a Masters Degree in Visual Art at UTS Sydney doing my major on The Blake Prize for Religious Art - my thesis 'The Spiritual in Art' was influenced by the works of Kandinsky, Matisse, Chagall, Boyd and Coburn.

In my art practice I express a visual narrative within a fiesta of colour on canvas. I regularly exhibit in Group Shows around Australia and have received numerous awards - being a finalist twice in The Mosman Art Prize. My Solo Exhibitions include 'Sands of Egypt' 1995, 'Cetacean' 2002 and 'Aqua Blue' in 2003.

Essential to all my works is the line. Drawing is the embodiment of intimacy, whether it be a still-life or a nude model. From the tactile quality of the paper, the charcoal and the pastel I am lead to capturing the essence and life of form. Drawing enriches my perception of the visual world and influences my search 'for something more' in my painting.
